Music & Lyrics by E.Mirvis; The Best Friend
"Long time", which means decades ago,
Not distant relative, nor bro,
But that first friend, whom I did know,
Helped me start our friendship’s dough.
I feel like that was yesterday:
We rushed to age our years away,
Had handy tricks, dumb stories’ pearls--
To trick some girls.
Our path was clear, so no debates.
The days we couldn’t enumerate
But from sunrise to long day's end,
We learned what truly makes "best friends."
We felt more grown than we seemed,
Just shy intuitive esteem,
Told our “maturity” wasn’t “true”,
Oh, déjà vu
Choir:
Then every long school year thereafter,
We couldn’t wait for summer’s laughter.
From daily dietary librettos,
And from our lonely two falsettos,
We ran headlong towards each other.
Mock, always, joke and argue further:
Trying to hide in clumsy teasing
The sentimental sense of missing.

Then, we stepped out in real ways.
And our courses head away:
We strived to reach unclear ends
Some tasks we couldn't comprehend.
We met our wives, we left our wives,
Behaved too risky or unwise,
Without the help of your best friends,
Who could make sense?
If not a friend, who’ll understand?
Who’ll whisper which way is dead-end?
That your life path is gently ruled,
And you are loved, not ridiculed.
We've been too young to be aware,
How unforgiving’s every year:
We lost too many. What a shame:
No one's to blame.
Choir
Moreover, every followed summer,
We had unanswered and uncovered,
The major life-related questions,
With a friend who's selfless and suggestive.
With whom do we want to run together?
Whose thoughts do we value most, and rather
Without him, we feel horrific,
and the meanings look pseudo-scientific.

Much more and a deeper sense of fame
I'm finding in the puppy games.
While my friend, whom, I know from birth
Is in other corner of the Earth.
When he and I feel blue or great,
When both of us cross tie our fates,
When he’s concerned for my life's stings,
for little things.
You haven’t grasped, but now you should
That you're back to solitude,
And only best friends' dialogue
Would make a decent epilogue
And I ask fate for a simple gift.
Keep us together in the drift.
To give him happy, healthy days
No more to say.
